As you know, Optical Tools Corporation specializes in manufacturing innovative, easy-to-use and cost-effective optical devices for scientists and OEM product developers. In addition, we stand ready to assist you with any custom Electro-optical design requirements you may have. Our custom instrumentation experience spans a wide range of prior accomplishments:

  • Developed an ellipsometric optical system for analyzing several antigen-antibody reactions specific to human communicable diseases in vitro using an off-the-shelf 525 nm LED source. System requirements included a 20 degree incident angle, 1 uW sample surface incident power, 180 um FWHM incident spot diameter, and 500:1 detector S/N in a medical office environment. A white paper is available describing this activity.

  • Developed a prototype medical diagnostic instrument based on the detection of antibody coated fluorescent microspheres in vitro. The system featured two channels of excitation in the blue and 20-nm wide detector filtering. Signal-to-noise ratio was maximized using lock-in amplification techniques. This device was delivered within budget in six weeks, and is shown in the photo to the right.

  • Designed and constructed a novel battery powered light concentration system for a 15W halogen lamp. The system featured dual rhodium plated ellipsoidal reflectors, placed end-to-end. Power was delivered through a 16" diameter brass tube at better than 50% efficiency.

  • Designed and tested fault detection circuitry for a medical blood/fluid warming instrument. Compiled detailed Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) which was explained in detail to the FDA in a 510K submittal. The instrument was proven to meet or exceed UL 2601 requirements for medical electrical equipment safety and IEC 1000-4 requirements for electromagnetic compatibility.

  • Designed and released a low-cost one pulse-per-revolution optical shaft encoder for use in Kodak photocopiers. The unit featured a precision, chemically etched stainless steel rotor and electronic pulse width adjustment.

  • Provided assistance to a large medical device manufacturer in defining worldwide regulatory requirements for endoscopic cameras and related products, including the European Medical Device Directive. Study resulted in a management reorganization of worldwide compliance activities. A primer on the European Medical Device Directive is available.

  • Provided electromagnetic compatibility consulting in the development of a human blood viral inactivation device. Interpreted relevant standards, wrote test plans, attended EMC and electrical safety laboratory tests, and implemented solutions for problem areas.
